UMO Helsinki Proudly Presents: Great Voices

30.10.2019

UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra presents a new concert series Great Voices dedicated to stellar vocalists!

The first show in the series will see American jazz singer and songwriter China Moses perform in Finland for the very first time. Having won over audiences around the world, this power woman will take jazz to a new era and create her own standards. The brand new program will pay homage to the soulful side of vocal jazz and to female soul greats, some well-known and some forgotten, called “The Jazz Heart of Soul”. The collaborative concert will be conducted by UMO Helsinki’s new chief conductor and artistic director, the American-Austrian Ed Partyka.

The second show sees UMO Helsinki joined by British-Nigerian soul singer and songwriter Ola Onabulé. Without reserve, Onabulé can be called a man with a voice and a message. This concert will see Onabulé and UMO Helsinki play the guest soloist’s original soul material, with an emphasis on the 2019 album Point Less, in brand new big band renditions. Also this concert will be led by Ed Partyka.

– Over my career as an arranger and band-leader I have developed a love of working with and writing for vocalists. For me a vocalist that can tell a good story is a huge asset to a modern jazz orchestra and substantially helps the connection between orchestra and audience, says Partyka.

– Often, the music performed by jazz orchestras in the 21st century can be challenging for advanced listeners and sometimes downright frightening for less advanced listeners. And please trust me, I’ve frightened more than a few listeners in my career! But something I learned along the way is if you add lyrics (and of course someone who can sing them), it creates something solid for a listener to hold on to that abstract instrumental music often does not.
