Prepare yourself for a club night of surprising and inspiring sounds, challenging the customary and traditional big band sound! The musicians of the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra are known for their wide range, and in this concert, they stretch and reexamine the boundaries of big band music under the baton of conductor Mikko Hassinen. The guest artists are the barytone saxophonist Pepa Päivinen, retired from UMO and known as an avant-garde trailblazer of free jazz, as well as the unique voice talent, jazz singer, and cellist Anni Elif. The name UMO comes from the Finnish words Uuden Musiikin Orkesteri, meaning orchestra for new music, and in this concert, we focus tightly on new music. Kirmo Lintinen’s new commissioned work gets its premiere during this club night. Laura Haimila hosts the evening events and discussions, ensuring that the audience follows along in the whirlwind of new musical discoveries. This is a night of bravery, experimentation, and creativity – follow along!

UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a new club concerts series. The series comprising six club nights wraps up the history of the orchestra in the words “UMO before, now and in the future”.
For decades, the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra has been at the forefront of Finnish jazz. Starting in summer 2025 and continuing all the way to spring 2026, the orchestra will celebrate its 50th anniversary. During the years, the orchestra has transformed many times. Once again, it’s time to create something new as UMO launches its club nights at the Helsinki Music Centre’s Black Box in collaboration with the Music Centre, bringing a touch of international jazz club culture to Helsinki.
The pulsating jazz club offers six surprising and intimate nights, during which UMO, together with guest artists, introduces different aspects of itself, from the traditional to the experimental. Each club night also includes a discussion, inviting interesting and sometimes even surprising guests to speak. The discussions and club nights are hosted by journalist, presenter, and influencer Laura Haimila.
– UMO’s new club in Black Box at the Music Centre is a place that brings together friends of jazz and big band music. Together with guest soloists, conductors, composers, arrangers, participants in conversations as well as the audience, UMO creates moments that challenge our expectations and open up new dimensions by merging the traditional and the experimental. Here, we can experience something that has the potential to go down in history, says UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra’s Managing Director Henriika Steidel-Luoto.
– The Music Centre congratulates the 50-year-old UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra! We are pleased to warmly welcome UMO to the Music Centre. We aim to present our audience with a broad selection of different music genres, and UMO’s new club nights, with their jazz pulse, are a fantastic complement to our current concert offerings, says the Helsinki Music Centre’s Managing Director Emilia Mäki.

The orchestra has shared the stage with international jazz stars as well as Finnish artists. One thing remains constant: the core of UMO is in new music. Join us for our anniversary season to look back on the past and celebrate our achievements, all while keeping our eyes firmly on the exciting future ahead. Why not pop in for a cup of coffee, to check out our brilliant array of art exhibitions and our fantastic resident artworks or even just to take a look – the architecture itself is worth a visit.
