Come and experience the timeless brilliance of Duke Ellington’s music as pianist Jason Moran and UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra pay homage to the composer’s legacy in a magnificent way. My Heart Sings – Celebrating the Music of Duke Ellington is Moran’s new project – in the spirit of last year’s 125th anniversary celebration of the late pianist.
Jason Moran (b. 1975) is a jazz pianist, composer and artistic director from Houston, Texas, who is considered one of the most significant jazz musicians of his generation. He has released over fifteen albums, composed music for theatre and film (Selma, 13th) and collaborated with Charles Lloyd and Cassandra Wilson, among others. Moran works as the artistic director of jazz at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., teaches at the New England Conservatory and has received several prestigious awards during his career, including a MacArthur Fellowship.
Duke Ellington (1899–1974) was one of the greatest composers, conductors and pianists of the 20th century – a jazz icon whose unique style revolutionized the fusion of jazz, blues and swing. His hit songs such as It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing), In a Sentimental Mood and Take the A Train continue to inspire musicians and audiences around the world.
Expect a wonderful and swinging evening, where Moran’s pianism, classical compositions and the plush big band sound of UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra meet! Jason Moran leads the orchestra from behind the piano. The concert is part of UMO’s 50th anniversary season.
