A joint concert by three orchestras takes the listener to the extremes of emotion. The concert’s soloist is the Venla Award–winning Maria Ylipää.

What does a world sound like where love, loneliness, hysteria, and ecstasy collide through the power of staged music? A joint concert by the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra, the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, and the Finnish Baroque Orchestra takes the listener to emotional extremes – from quiet melancholy to musical exuberance.

Shining as the soloist in this concert is Venla Award–winning actor and musical theatre star Maria Ylipää. Her exceptional charisma and wide-ranging expressive power guide the audience through at least thirteen distinct moods and emotional landscapes – from the 17th century to the present day – in collaboration with three uniquely different ensembles.

In the concert, works by 17th-century English composers Matthew Locke and Henry Purcell enter into dialogue with a cult classic of 20th-century avant-garde music, Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire. The story of the moon-mad Pierrot explores love, madness, and death – themes which hysteria can grow along many different paths.

The concert is part of the joint AUF series by the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra, UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, and the Finnish Baroque Orchestra (FiBO), produced in collaboration with the Helsinki Music Centre. Representing different musical traditions, these leading ensembles invite audiences to explore a rich variety of musical flavours.
