UMO’s saxophone section will suffer a huge loss when two long-standing members, baritone saxophonist Pertti “Pepa” Päivinen and tenor saxophonist Teemu Salminen, retire from the orchestra this autumn.

Naturally, the occasion calls for a goodbye concert, which limelights the two gentlemen and consists of their own favourite music. This means classic pieces from such giants as Duke Ellington and Bob Brookmeyer. Five decades in UMO’s ranks guarantee that the pair has more than a few fascinating stories and anecdotes up their sleeve, and what would be a better occasion to share the juiciest ones with us?

Pertti “Pepa” Päivinen’s deep and robust baritone sax sound is recognised around Finland and has called well-deserved attention also abroad. In addition to being a chameleonic and powerfully present baritone saxophonist, he is one of the finest reedsmen in Finland. Having kicked off his career in the 70s in notable Finnish rock and pop outfits, the multi-instrumentalist moved from popular music to jazz in the early 80s and has occupied the baritone saxophonist’s seat in UMO since 1985. Päivinen has released six albums under his own name and appears on almost all recordings by the legendary Finnish free jazz orchestra, Sound & Fury. He is both an Yrjö Jazz Prize and Emma Music Prize awardee. In UMO, he is known as a good-natured professional who always puts the orchestra’s interest before his own.

Having played in UMO since spring 1976 – pretty much the very beginning – Teemu Salminen is a true UMO veteran and master of woodwinds. Salminen trained and later taught in Sibelius Academy, and despite being best-known as a saxophonist this trusted trouper is equally at home playing different flutes and clarinets. One of the backbones of UMO, he is a deeply expressive soloist, a driving force in school concert productions and he has both composed and arranged plenty of material for the orchestra over the years. In addition to working in UMO, Salminen is known as a session and theatre musician and for his appearances on the radio. His archives, including old concert calendars, stories and retro performance outfits, have brought lots of joy to his colleagues.
