Savoy Theatre, Kasarmikatu 46, Helsinki
Savoy JAZZFest brings together Brazilian singer-songwriter Joyce Moreno and UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, who will celebrate the music of Antônio Carlos Jobim, the father of bossa nova.
There’s a rare blend of authentic and intimate bossa nova and samba embellished with the sound of big band. At the concert, Jobim’s iconic compositions, such as O Boto, Só Danco Samba and Ela é Carioca, will be heard. The concert is conducted by Ed Partyka.
The evening consists of two sets: trumpeter Tom Harrell (US) will perform on the second set to the evening. See the full festival program and ticket packages at the Savoy Theater website.
Joyce Moreno (b. 1948) is a Brazilian singer, guitarist, songwriter and composer. She has recorded more than 20 solo albums – the first in 1968 – and features over 400 recordings. She has made numerous recordings for films, television and theater. In addition to dozens of Brazilian stars, Joyce Moreno’s compositions have been recorded, among others, by Annie Lennox, Omara Portuondo and Black Eyed Pea. Moreno herself calls her music MCB, Brazilian creative music, but a more down to earth name could be a combination of fusion jazz, Bossa Nova and Brazilian folk music. Moreno has Scandinavian origins: his grandfather was Swedish and his grandmother Danish. Moreno’s father moved from Denmark to Brazil in the 1940s and got a daughter with a Brazilian woman.
And yes, in the promotional photo of the concert Joyce Moreno is wearing Finnish Marimekko’s Kivet pattern!
