Lunch concert:
UMO & Jarmo Julkunen
Tue 16.5.2017 at 12.00 // Savoy-theatre, Helsinki
The piece for big band and a banjo was commissioned from composer Sami Klemola and has its first public performance in May. UMO and the banjo soloist Jarmo Julkunen play the composition at Savoy Theatre in the last free of charge lunch concert of the spring season.
The banjo has long history in jazz music, and it was especially popular in the compositions of 1910’s and 1920’s. In this concert, banjo is not merely a minor character but a great protagonist. The audience has the privilege to hear what happens when a contemporary composer spices the rhythms of the banjo with electronic effects. In the brand new piece of music, absurd rhythmic is combined with a completely original sonic universe. Nevertheless, the music is energetic and easily accessible, a perfect midday treat.
The banjoist of the concert is a versatile musician, composer Jarmo Julkunen (b. 1973). In addition to his projects in classical and chamber music, he has collaborated widely with jazz musicians and poets, and he also has a history in theatre music. Fittingly, Julkunen says that interdisciplinary art projects are close to his heart.
Guitarist-composer Sami Klemola’s (b. 1973) versatile list of works includes, for example, chamber music, orchestral music, opera and sound installations. Klemola also works as a teacher in Sibelius Academy and as the artistic director of Tampere Biennale (festival of contemporary music).
The conductor of the concert is Kirmo Lintinen.
The concert is played at Savoy Theatre 12–1 p.m. and is free of charge. Lunch is served next door at restaurant Presto before and after the concert (from €10.20). The lunch is not compulsory, so you can just walk in and enjoy the music.
Production: UMO Jazz Orchestra, Savoy Theatre and restaurant Presto.
