Make them dance!

Singer, trombonist, percussionist, Defunkt legend Joseph Bowie can be called the master of funk with good reason, as he has entertained, made people dance and driven them wild around the world for decades.

Bowie features as a soloist of the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra at the Savoy Theatre on Friday, October 13, 2023. His partner in crime in this concert will be young and virtuoso Finnish talent, jazz and soul singer Maja Mannila.

Together, this captivating 20-something ensemble performs the music of the Defunkt band from the 1970s to the present day. The night will be full of funk, soul and jazz and the music will definitely make your feet move! The program is arranged by Ed Partyka, who also conducts the concert.

Joseph “Joe” Bowie was born as the youngest of a family of musicians in Missouri, USA, in 1953. Bowie has been heavily influenced by his father William, who was a music teacher, as well as his two older brothers, the saxophonist Byron and the trumpeter Lester. Bowie made his first international tour as early as 1971 and performed for the first time at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1973. For years, he influenced both the jazz circles of Paris and the rhythm’n’blues scene of Chicago and New York. Bowie has recorded some fifteen albums with his band Defunkt. He has lived in Holland for twenty years, from where he has built a career all over Europe. www.josephbowie.com
