Heikki Tuhkanen

Heikki Tuhkanen ( b. 1983) is one of the most gifted and versatile of the Y-generation Finnish jazz trombonists, being a go-to man for many big bands. In addition to UMO, he has played in the ranks of e.g. Ricky-Tick Big Band, Espoo Big Band and, during his  student years in the Netherlands, the Dutch Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw. He has appeared on recordings by the likes of John Scofield, Lenny Pickett, Nils Landgren, Rick Margitza, Kurt Elling and Martha Reeves.

Initially, Tuhkanen took up the cello at the age of five but switched into the trombone six years later. Participating in a big band summer camp in his early teens sparked an interest in jazz music. In 2001, having graduated from high school and removed to the capital, he commenced studies at the Pop & Jazz Conservatory, majoring in the jazz trombone. It was already during his student years that he performed extensively with different groups and artists. After completing his degree at the conservatory in 2004, he begun his studies at the Jazz Department of the Sibelius Academy. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in music in 2012.

Tuhkanen has played live around the globe, in the Caribbean, Central Europe, Russia, Sweden and Finland, among others. His versatility has increased with years, and his style is enriched with influences from free jazz to funk and reggae. Some of the most active orchestras and acts he has collaborated with in recent years include Ricky-Tick Big Band, Espoo Big Band, Jimi Tenor, Jukka Poika, Raappana and Vantaan Viihdeorkesteri.
